We hear music every day – on the radio, in the grocery store, in the gym and on our phones. But what kind of music? It’s mostly background noise, catchy tunes on the top 40 list and old favorites from decades past. What do we listen to that actually means something, touches our soul?
Since the inception of worship and services, music has always played a role in them. It is plain to see why, as it has been consistently mentioned within scripture:
“cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God. … [for] the songs of the Lord. …” (1 Chr. 25:6–7.)
“Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the Lord with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.” (2 Chr. 29:30.)
“make a selection of sacred hymns, as it shall be given thee, which is pleasing unto me, to be had in my church. For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.” (D&C 25:11–12.)
“O sing unto the Lord a new song; … make a joyful noise unto the Lord. …” (Ps. 98:1, 4.)
People have been enhancing their praise with music for centuries, and it is plain to see why. Music makes us feel something intensely. Music augments the Word. To add rhythm to Scripture brings the words to life. Music’s therapeutic effect takes hold and we are lost in the songs.
