Brad Vogel is an Organ Performance Major at Baldwin Wallace University. Brad was kind enough to sit down with interviewer Tessa Louche to discuss his music career.
Tessa: So you’re an organ major. What is your secondary instrument?
Brad: Yes, I’m an organ performance major in addition to composition. My secondary is Piano.
T: What made you choose organ as your primary above piano?
B: Well, I was planning on piano until my junior year of high school. That’s when I started playing organ and I found out I really liked it. I took piano lessons from my church director, eventually asked if I could start taking organ lessons. Then I switched to just organ and I decided that that’s what I want to do.
T: Do you prefer pipe or digital organs?
B: Oh, pipe; the sound of electronics are never going to match up. It’s like playing a keyboard versus a real piano, it just fundamentally sounds better.
T: What’s your long-term career goal? Do you want to teach, perform, work on organs?
B: Ultimately, it’s hard to say, I can see a combination of all of that. What I really want is to make a career more on the composition side, specifically film composition.
T: Ah, okay – do you know what kind of films?
B: Any kind, really, I haven’t nailed down the specifics yet. I want to do movies, TV, possibly video games.
T: What made you consider a career in film composition? Are you a big movie buff?
B: Yeah, I like movies. Specifically, I like how music interacts with the theatrics.
T: It doesn’t pack the same punch.
B: Right. A movie isn’t a movie, really, without the music. I mean, it is, but it changes the viewer’s experience. I want to do that, change the viewer’s experience.
